For a short time in the early 1980s VIA discontinued the Montreal-Sudbury sections of The Canadian and ran it from Montreal to Toronto on CN's Kingston Sub. Westbound No. 1 left Montreal at 1630, arriving Toronto at 2210. Eastbound No. 2 left Toronto at 0900 arriving Montreal at 1510. Here we see No. 2 about a mile east of Newcastle on September 22, 1983.

Normally an RDC run we see CP train 359 going 'around the horn' at West Toronto with FP-7 1432 and 6 cars, on Friday April 17, 1964. The extra set of louvers ahead of the first porthole is a spotting feature for FP-9s but 1432 is unique as she was involved in a wreck and sent back to GM Diesel in London for rebuilding. GM used an FP-9 front end to make repairs.

CP train 903 has just passed under Simcoe Street in Oshawa led by FP-7 4071 and RS-2 8407 on March 16, 1966. The Simcoe Street overpass was built for two tracks and the extra space can be seen to the right of the train. The second track was never installed but current plans for GO train expansion to Bowmanville will make use of this hundred year old "future" planning.

A CN eastbound with C-424 3233 and FA-2 9432 is about to pass under Waverly Road, Bowmanville on June 22, 1967. The westbound train beside it has a PGE flat car with some loose steel band lying on it. This was a hazard which railway employees working near moving trains had to watch for as it could cause serious injury.

Almost exactly 11 years after my Belleville picture of CN 2335 we see her eastbounud at Brock Street, Whitby. This scene has changed dramatically today as the bridge was replaced and two GO Transit tracks have been added to the right of the CN. The ore cars contained slag which was being used for ballast by both CN and CP. A few years later it was decided that slag was too contaminated to be used this way.

Displays at Belleville 'Railway Days' on July 4, 1971 included new M-636 2335.The four freight cars painted to advertise their uses included refers for fruit and meat, a newsprint box and a grain hopper.

Here is the west to east view of the CN derailment at Bowmanville May 19, 1974. The folks in the house at the right must have found this affair a little disconcerting. The house was torn down just a few weeks ago (Sept. 2016) to make way for a new housing development.

A few weeks ago I posted a photo of a CN westbound passenger and one of the Turbo train detouring on CP's Belleville Sub. at Bowmanville. Here we see the reason why as two CN 'big hooks' are working on a derailment about a mile east of Bowmanville which blocked both CN main liines. This view is looking west from just west of Bennet Road. The locomotive on the east end hook was 5553 and the Toronto hook working on the other end of the mess had 4563 and 4011 for power.

A pair of dual service RS-10s are about to depart West Toronto for Windsor with a 7 car No 21 on August 19, 1963. In less than a year this train will be discontinued in favour of RDCs. 21 continued to operate from Montreal to Toronto as a standard train for a few more years.

Tiny icicles have formed on the headlight of CN U1b 4-8-2 6034 stopped at West Toronto station. This Clayton Morgan photo is taken on a rather chilly February 15, 1958. My photo program removed a small spot in the upper left of the picture. I now realize it was the sun shining through ice crystals in a cloudy sky.

Three GE 70 ton units are in close quarters at the ferry dock in Port Borden PEI on this June 1, 1968. These are 600 hp class ER-6, with a max. speed of 55 mph. CN had 16 of them.

This photo of CP H-16-44 8710, by Bruce Chapman shows what happens when shop workers are in a hurry to get a unit out and into service. The hood doors got mixed up, perhaps leaving the observer to wonder which railway this is.

Clayton's first interest is electric traction. On Easter weekend 1958 he and a friend traveled to Quebec City to photograph the Quebec Railway Light and Power operations as they were due to end in a few months. Here we see elderly CN Pacific 5071 near the end of the wires at St. Joachim, 25 miles east of Quebec City. The passenger service continued to LaMalbaie at mile 87.8 and the line ended at Nairn's Falls, another 5 miles east.

A few weeks ago I posted Ian Walker's front 3/4 photo of this train. Here, thanks to the magic of Dan Dell'Unto, is a side view. It's a chilly night in January 1981 and one of the F units on the Canadian has failed. CP SD-40 5519 has been called in to assist VIA 6536 (still in CN paint) and VIA 6569 (ex CP 1425). Thanks for sharing, Ian. Judging by baggage to be handled, business must be good.

This view from the Finch Ave. bridge shows an eastbound grain train departing Toronto Yard. The power is 4073-8760-4097 and yard engine 6709. The 6709 is an SW-8. The Oshawa yard engine for many years, 6709 is likely returning to Oshawa after some maintenance at Toronto Yard. FP7,4073, a GMD product of October 1952, was regeared to 89 mph and renumbered 1429 in December 1954. As CP moved away from the passenger business the 1429 was renumbered to the original 4073 and back to to 65 mph in October 1965. The extra under frame water tank remains and these FP7s were sometimes used in passenger service in spite of the 65 mph freight gearing.In the foreground MLW S2 7089 goes about switching duties.

This photo is taken between the CP and CN bridges at Port Hope, looking west. At the extreme left we can see two CN 'big hooks' working on a derailment at the west end of their bridge. The train at the extreme right is No. 60, the morning Rapido with engine 6534 (out of the picture). Coupled to the tail end of No. 60 is the Lakeshore, No. 50 and they are moving through the interchange track to move as one train. The engines on 50 are about at the interchange switch on the CP side. I'm guessing they would go back to CN rails at Brighton.I posted another detour taken the same day, Aug.7,1970, of a westbound CN express train on CP's bridge.

In the mid 1950s General Motors Diesel in London, designed and produced a handful of diesel-hydraulic locomotives. They were hardly a success. Of the GMDH1s one was exported to Brazil and one to Pakistan and one dubbed the "Blue Goose" remained in London as plant switcher. A GMDH3 model went to subsidiary McKinnon Industries in St. Catharines as their plant switcher. In this photo by Clayton Morgan, we see the Blue Goose at GMD London on November 21, 1959.

CN No. 209 was the all stops Belleville to Toronto evening local. He we see the train stopped at Bowmanville with 1905-3118-steam generator 15471 and 10 cars. The consist will be all mail and express cars with one or two coaches on the tail end. This train often had a pair of GMD-1s but not often a GMD-1 and an RS-18 together as on this August 3, 1966.

PGE Mixed train M18 from Lillooet is seen arriving at North Vancouver January 10, 1959. All of the 28 stations were regular or flag stops for M18 except Creekside. The 158 mile trip took 8 hours and 20 minutes for an average speed of 19 mph. This is a slide I traded for many years ago and did not record the photographer's name.

Ian Walker took two great night photos of VIA's Canadian at Ottawa. It's a chilly January night in 1981 and one of the F units has failed. CP SD-40 5519 has been pressed into passenger service. Later that year VIA began running The Canadian through Toronto and on to Montreal on the Kingston Sub.
